Form 1099-DA: What Your Exchange Reports for 2026

Custodial exchanges report digital-asset sales on Form 1099-DA. For sales in 2025 they reported gross proceeds; from 2026 they also report cost basis for "covered" coins — generally those bought in the same account on or after January 1, 2026.

What that means for your 2026 return

  • Coins bought in 2026 and sold in the same account: the 1099-DA should show basis, and the line goes in box G or J.
  • Older coins, or coins transferred in: proceeds without basis, box H or K. You supply the basis — that's what your full history is for.
  • Sales from your own wallet: no 1099-DA, box I or L.

Forms usually arrive in late January or February. Lotsift can give you the numbers now, and you can check them against the form when it comes.
